  • CANDLE RECORDS CLOSES AFTER 13 YEARS

Thanks to everybody that ordered directly from Candle in March, we raised $2061.17 that we will be donating to Cancer Council, Victoria for cancer research.

It’s with a heavy heart that after 12 years of running Candle Records, the label closed on March 31, 2007. Candle Records has been a big part of my life, run on the passion and love of music. I have made so many good friends and have worked with an incredible group of talented people. Great friendships have formed and the Candle family has in fact felt like a family. My job has involved managing bands, releasing albums, booking shows, publicising gigs, selling CDs, running the mail order and website and it’s all been an absolute pleasure. But now is the time for change.

There are a lot of people I would like to thank. Firstly all the bands I have worked with over the years. I’ve been blessed to work with many talented and inspirational people. My heartfelt thanks goes to: Anthony Atkinson, Rob Clarkson, Cuddlefish, The Dearhunters, Richard Easton, The Girls From The Clouds, Golden Rough, The Guild League, Darren Hanlon, The Lucksmiths, The Mabels, Mid-State Orange, Tim Oxley, Jodi Phillis, Ruck Rover, Sandro, The Simpletons, The Small Knives, Stella One Eleven and Weave. I also would like to acknowledge the genius of Cheyne Gelagin, who without him there would be no Candle Records.

A big thank you to: Danielle Atkinson who did a great job running the label with me for 6 years. Richard Herbert who has done an incredible job with the Candle website. The fact so many people around the world know the label and bands is a testament to his help. Many thanks also to Justine Dobbs, Angus Kingston, Jason Crouch, Dave Ellis, Mark & MGM and Mike Babb. And to all the media, labels and venues that have helped over the years.

Finally a massive thank you to you! Your support has enabled Candle Records to survive and prosper since 1994. This year has been one of most successful years and I’m happy to go out on a high with the quality of releases of the Darren Hanlon and Anthony Atkinson albums, and both have been a huge part of the label since day one. I’m proud there’s been no other label like Candle and probably never will be. Running an independent label has been a difficult but ultimately extremely rewarding.

Hopefully you’ve enjoyed the music and the shows. The bands will continue on but with new homes. I plan to take a well deserved holiday and will continue to run Polyester Records in Fitzroy.

    Many thanks,

    Chris Crouch

MESSAGES FROM CANDLE BANDS AND THEIR FUTURE

If you're after Candle t-shirts, Candle compilations and some of our releases try visiting the PVH Records website

    From Marky (The Lucksmiths):
“Hi Candle Records lovers, the world over! Well, it’s with a tear in the eye that we write these words. The last Candle newsletter. What now? Well, luckily I have that information right at my fingertips. We’re just preparing all the Lucksmiths titles for release on the Lost And Lonesome website, and though we usually like to do things at a Sunday afternoon snail’s pace over here at L&L, I must say, our old friends Copy and Paste are getting a serious workout. We’d love to keep you all informed as to what we’re up to, so please come visit the L&L website, and join our email list. Or drop us a line at info@lostandlonesome.com.au

I must admit, the thought of setting out without the guiding hand of Candle is a daunting prospect. Nevertheless, we’re big kids now so onwards we forge. In the near future we have some Melbourne shows coming up (see below), followed by a spot of interstate touring. And most exciting for us — we’ve started writing some new songs! So we hope to see you at a show soon. Please drop by The Lucksmiths website from time to time, as we do actually make updates, heh heh… And your guestbook entries are always a welcome sight.

Well, so long Crouchy. See you in the shop. (Do I still get Staff Discount?)”

    From Plastic Viking Helmet Records:
Plastic Viking Helmet Records is a new label run by Phil from the Small Knives. PVH Records will be taking on a large portion of the Candle Records back catalogue. PVH will be running the same web sales and offer the same standard of service that Candle fans have appreciated. The site will be www.pvhrecords.com and will be up and running by mid April. So a lot of the Candle stuff that’s still available will be available online through PVH. Also the new Richard Easton will be coming out on PVH, hopefully in the not too distant future.

    From Rob Clarkson:
"Hello there. I find myself within what is often known as 'a lull in proceedings'. Lots of chords and tunes, bugger-all lyrics, in other words. In fact, other words would be handy. I have one of them-there myspace sites, so keep an eye on www.myspace.com/robclarkson for gigs etc. I promise I'll give the space a spring clean soon. Certainly by spring."

    From Darren Hanlon:
“For me it will be business as usual; touring and recording. My CDs will be available online at www.pvhrecords.com I'm currently in the process of negotiating a new label etc. Also seeking new management and admin support so if you know someone that might know someone.....contact me at slimsings@hotmail.com or www.myspace.com/darrenhanlon. For gig and news updates visit www.darrenhanlon.com Thanks"

    From Anthony Atkinson:
“Once Sony/BMG and EMI sought out this crazy bidding war that's taking place over my back catalogue I will comfortably fall into life between labels by playing reasonably regularly with my band The Running Mates (this thursday the 29th at the Old bar being one such outing) and writing and touring where my schedule allows which will more than likely be during school holidays. The band have just come off a huge show at Merri Creek Primary school fete and it's safe to say that we are "Amped" for the what the future holds having struck such a decisive chord with the ever elusive Grade 2 crowd. www.myspace.com/anthonyatkinson

    From The Guild League:
“The Guild League are planning to record an EP mid-year and are looking to increase their live presence around Melbourne and also interstate having thoroughly enjoyed their recent tour. They are currently weighing up options as to where their post-Candle home will be. To receive notification of Guild League news, tours, gigs and future recordings visit their myspace and become their friend at www.myspace.com/theguildleague or send an email to theguildleague@gmail.com with "join mailing list" in the subject title. We will also be supporting The Steinbecks for their CD launch at the Northcote SC, Melbourne on Wednesday the 11th April.”

From Jodi Phillis & Tim Oxley:
“Hey folks, In case you're wondering what the future holds for Jodi Phillis and Tim Oxley now that Candle's gone khapoot, here's the scoop. Well apart from being head down in the studio working on The Girls From the Clouds debut album (which is coming along very nicely!), we've also been concocting a secret new project which goes by the name, Roger Loves Betty. After 2 solo albums from Tim and 3 from Jodi, we've decided that it's time to join forces and form something altogether fresh and new but still humming along the same gentle and sweet lines as our past solo efforts. Roger Loves Betty is our lovechild, incorporating all our favourite styles of pop music, from the dawn of the genre until now.

We want to thank Chris and all our musical mates from Candle Records, for 12 years of joyfully independent music making and we wish everyone the best of luck for the future. Tim and I will be putting together a live band and playing somewhere near you in the not too distant future. We're unsure whether we'll put the album out ourselves or through a new label but you can check into www.myspace.com/rogerlovesbetty for the latest news or email us at rogerlovesbetty@aapt.net.au”

    From The Small Knives:
“The Small Knives are releasing their second album "Smoke and Ribbons" on the Plastic Viking Helmet label in the next few months. They are about to do a short overseas tour and play the prestigious All Tomorrows Parties at the request of The Dirty Three. They'll be touring Australia from August onwards. Writing has begun for a third album, and they hope to get into the studio again before the end of the year. Email smallknives@unwired.com.au, listen to tracks from the new album or leave them a confusing message at http://www.myspace.com/thesmallknives

    From Golden Rough:
“Golden Rough are on an extended break. Dave Orwell is currently playing with a new project, Homemade Plane. They have recorded an album "Streaks Of Light" which is to be released on a new label, Big Fan Records. Golden Rough's back catalogue will also be available through Big Fan.” Please see the following web sites for details:

From the Girls From The Clouds:
“Fans of jagged melodious pop were saddened back in 1997 when Sydney's beloved exponents of this genre, The Clouds disbanded after 8 momentous years. They'd set wheels in motion though, and many acts were to follow in their footsteps, exploring the light and dark possibilities in a pop song. However, no-one quite managed to come close to the startling harmonies, experimental writing, and sheer live chemistry that was The Clouds. That is, until Crouchy thought the unthinkable and did the undoable! He alone secured exclusive rights to the highly anticipated return to musical partnership of the Clouds' two founding members and songstresses unequalled, Jodi Phillis and Trish Young. Calling themselves The Girls From The Clouds, the pair approached Chris with an ep of 5 brand new songs and Candle released it as Lalalala in November 2005. Following the fine Candle tradition of artists playing in each other bands, Tim Oxley joined The Girls on drums and the trio have been making a noise ever since.

But.....fans of soulful melodious pop were saddened back in 2006 when Australia's beloved proponents of this genre, Candle Records, disbanded after 12 momentous years. Wheels are in motion, though, and TGFTC have almost finished recording their debut album, and are looking for a new home. It will emerge sometime soon. We wish Chris all the very best for the future in whatever he undertakes, and ditto to all our erstwhile stablemates. Maybe we could organise a Candle reunion show!! Whatever happens, our hearts will go on.” www.myspace.com/thegirlsfromtheclouds
